It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

I'm linking up with It's Monday! What Are You Reading? Currently, I'm reading books to get a suitable selection for my fourth graders to read as a book club related to Civil Rights. We will be completing project work focusing on the following essential question: How can conflict create change? I thought the kids would be able to really dig deep, thinking about this question through the lens of historical fiction while they are studying the Civil Rights Movement in social studies. I've read Glory Be, which is a keeper for our book club. Now I'm reading The Lions of Little Rock, and I'm loving it!

What are you reading? Do you have any suggestions for our book club? If so, leave them below as a comment.

  1. I just started Blood on the River with my three fifth grade social studies classes today. It is historical fiction about the founding of Jamestown and my absolute favorite book.

  2. This is a great book! Have you read The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis? Also a fantastic read.

  3. You'll have to let me know if you still like "Lions of Little Rock" at the end! (I'm over at riceandcoffee.wordpress.com!) Right now I am reading "The Sunday Philosophy Club," but I just got some new, un-begun Y.A., and I'm super excited about it! Happy reading! :)

  4. The Lions of Little Rock is a great title! Deborah Wiles 60's trilogy is another great resource. Have you read Revolution? It's a powerful combination of fiction and nonfiction. Then there is One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia. Actually all of the Gaither series fit right into your theme. Good luck!
